Cycling Around the Island
Rarotonga is approximately 32 kilometres in circumference — a distance that makes cycling around the entire island a comfortable half-day to full-day experience. The main road (the Ara Tapu, the coastal road) circles the island at sea level, and the inner road (the Ara Metua, one of the oldest roads in Polynesia — a coral-block road built approximately 1,000 years ago) provides an alternative route through the island’s interior villages. A bike tour follows one or both roads, stopping at beaches, cultural sites, viewpoints, and village shops.
The terrain is flat along the coast (the coral road surface is smooth), and e-bikes are available for the few gentle inclines and for the comfort of riding in tropical heat (25–30°C year-round). The compact island means you are never far from a cold drink, a beach, or a shade tree.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to cycle around Rarotonga?
At a leisurely touring pace with stops (beaches, villages, cafes), approximately 3–5 hours. Faster riders without stops can complete the loop in 1.5–2 hours.
Do I need to be fit?
For the coastal road (flat, 32 km), moderate fitness is sufficient. An e-bike eliminates the fitness question entirely.
What is the Ara Metua?
An ancient coral-block road in the island’s interior, built approximately 1,000 years ago — one of the oldest continuously used roads in Polynesia. The inland route passes through villages and plantations with a different character from the coastal road.
